Windy City

We had a crazy wind storm in December.  It felt like our house was about to blow over.  The roof creaked and creaked all night and Miguel said the windows were bending in and out.  Amazingly the kids slept through most of it.  When we woke up, many homes in our area were devoid of shingles and/or siding and many vinyl fences had broken to bits.  Quite a few people in our neighborhood lost windows (one family left when their window broke and the wind was blowing like crazy into their house-- one family had a sliding door blow in and had leaves covering their floor).  There were also many stop signs and street signs blownn over.  We only lost a small amount compared to everyone else.  We thought we were okay until last week when it snowed and water started dripping in our living room!  Almost two months later there are still homes without shingles or siding or windows (most have plywood to cover the hole).  Many, many of the businesses in the county lost their signs.

We were without power for the day, so we lit the pilot light on the stove with a lighter and had grilled cheese and hot chocolate.  Some new friends came over for the day and hung out in our cold house.  It was a little disconcerting having Miguel gone and no way of getting in touch with him.  It was hard not being able to find out what was going on in the outside world.  When the wind died down in the evening we got in the car and went to Cafe Rio for dinner with grandpa-- there were lots of people there sharing crazy stories.  My grandma, 90 years old, was without power for 2 days!  Many people in older sections of town lost trees or had trees fall on houses, cars, or garages.

We did get out of church the day after the storm and got to go clean up the neighborhood together.  There were national guard trucks carrying away debris by the freeway-- it was piled as high as the cement sound barrier and probably 10+ feet deep as well.  We're just glad we're all safe.
